Gary's Greeting: back to top

Spring is definitely in the air at Heartland! April and May are two of my favorite months to be outdoors and to experience Heartland’s beauty.

Morel mushrooms will be popping up over the next couple weeks! The wet spring we have experienced so far should make for some great hunting! Enjoy a relaxing walk across the rolling hills that surround the lodge looking for those delicious treasures. Or grab a 4-wheeler and take off to that “secret” spot on a remote part of the property.

The last thing you may be thinking about is reserving your hunt for this fall, but now is the time to secure a good date. We had a tremendous season last fall and we are looking to build on that this year.

If you have not done so already, please take a minute and read what others have to say about their Heartland experience on our testimonials page. I would also like to hear from you if you have not sent your testimonial already. If you have a special memory from your time spent at Heartland please share it with us. I look forward to seeing you this spring!

Best regards,

Gary

Upland: back to top

Wow! Can you believe it’s the first of April already? We just closed the book on an excellent season of bird hunting! I wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone that came and hunted with us this past season.

We have already started preparation for next year and I am excited to announce that we will be offering European Style Driven Pheasant Shoots starting in the fall of 2007. After the drives, guides will take the hunters down to the fields and surrounding woods where they can gun the escaped birds while using dogs to hunt them. We can incorporate this with a premium afternoon hunt that would make for an all around incredible day of wing- shooting.

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable spring and summer. We will be looking for you this fall in the upland fields at Heartland where you will have an excellent experience and “Traditions That Last A Lifetime”.

Whitetail: back to top

For those of you looking forward to the whitetail hunting this fall, our progress report couldn’t be any better. Food plots are getting planted as we speak, old plots are looking great, properties are being scouted that could hold your next trophy.

Don’t miss out on the hunting opportunity of a lifetime. Whether or not you prefer feathers or fur, we will make any hunt the best possible hunt it can be. If you have not reserved your trip for this fall, please contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.

Turkey: back to top

Spring has arrived at Heartland Lodge. The varmints are claiming the last of the sheds so now I turn my attention to the elusive eastern turkey. Each morning leading up to opening day, I hear more gobblers sounding off and strutting their stuff out in the fields. Their hoping that one of those hens would pay attention to them, instead of those bugs that seem to accompany the changing of the seasons. You should hear our guides, every one of them are breaking in their new mouth calls, working those slates, and biting at the bit to convince one of those toms that they are sweeter than the real thing.

An update from the “Crooked Slough Duck Hunting”

Well with the great success we enjoyed last year it inspired us to flood more ground and have a different look or “feel” in one of the new areas. We just finished having the excavator open the lower end of the field that we didn’t flood last year. (Next to the flooded field) As well we had a second levee put in so we will have another pit to choose from to hunt. So, we’ll have even more of the same great hunting area we enjoyed last year.

We also had levees built and pipes put in which will enable us to flood about a half mile of the original Crooked Slough. We’ll have a nice comfortable blind in that area that will give our patrons a totally different type of hunting experience. The ducks will work closer and the slough is surrounded by oak and willow trees which will give the hunter the feeling of being in flooded timber with the ducks being right on top of you before you see them. We’ve flooded this area in years past and we couldn’t keep the Wood Ducks, Gadwall, and Teal out. This all adds up to a lot of fast action and lots of fun. So be on your game or the ducks will see you.

I’m looking forward to 2007 being our best year yet. Bruce Smith will be guiding again this year and Matt Howland will be guiding as well. Matt is a great caller, good shot, great story teller, and just a real nice guy to have in the pit or blind with you. See you soon. It will be here before you know it.

I look forward to seeing you this fall!
