Upland Division: back to top

Wow! Can you believe it’s the middle of March already? So far we have had a wonderful season here at Heartland and it’s not over yet. We still have a couple of weeks of excellent hunting ahead of us and yes we do have some openings available. Not only are we still hard at work with the Upland hunting we are well on our way for next season.

This is an exciting time for us here at Heartland Lodge. We are looking into the possibility of expanding Heartland's Upland Division this spring which would add some new and exciting shooting opportunities for all to enjoy. Along with the new ground, we have started burning some of our fields to improve our native grass stands, and manipulating cover for our soon to be nesting birds. We are also in the process of organizing the structure and positioning of our food plots to optimize the cover and hunting opportunities for the upcoming season.

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable spring and summer. Remember, we will be looking for you this fall in the Upland fields at Heartland where you will have an excellent experience and “Traditions That Last A Lifetime”.

Whitetail: back to top
Hello again, this is Cory here at HARPOLE’S HEARTLAND LODGE. The smell of spring is once again in the air and it is a very exciting time for us at the lodge. We are getting busy in the fields putting in food plots and starting our preparation for the next deer season, which as we all know will be here before we know it. Soon the mornings will be filled with the roaring ring of our allusive eastern gobblers. Not much beats the first cold day in the fall when we deer hunters start to get “Buck Fever”, but this might. There is so much going on at the Farm: turkey hunting, shed hunting and all the preparation that goes into next deer season.

This year we are raising the bar again on the quality of our deer hunts. We have added several pieces of trophy caliber property to existing QDM properties. We are also almost tripling the amount of supplement food sources (food plots) that, combined with the immense amount of agricultural field (corn and soybean), should be more than enough food to ensure a healthy and productive deer herd this season. From an area in the country well known for its genetics and a plentiful food supply throughout the year, I think this will make for an amazing deer season this year.

With all that is going on don’t forget to get ready yourself. We still have a few great spots for the ‘06 hunting season, even a “Rut Spot” or two. So now is the perfect time to call Heartland Lodge and book you Dream Hunt. Remember HARPOLE’S HEARTLAND LODGE, "Traditions That Last A Life Time”.

Waterfowl: back to top

“Crooked Slough Duck Hunting Company” was legally created as a limited liability Company just a few months ago. I named the duck hunting facility in honor of the “Crooked Slough” that winds its way through our property in the Mississippi river bottoms near Pleasant Hill, IL, where I shot my first duck when I was ten years old.

Growing up in the suburbs of St. Louis I would go to our farm with my dad every week end, especially during duck hunting season. My love for waterfowl hunting began then (well over thirty years ago). Every year that I worked in the corporate world as a salesperson or sales manager I thought about when I retired and the possibility of finally being able to give as much time to duck hunting as I wanted. The time is now and I’ve been working for four years, building levees, putting pits in, relocating pits, pumping water, and the list goes on; to create a place to hunt ducks that will remind you of days past by creating an environment that will hold ducks for as long as they wish to stay.

This all started in the fall of 2002. We built levees and pumped water. We had to wait to get the crops out before we did this so by the time we were finished duck season was over half over. The levees held and the water didn’t leak through any sand veins hidden in the soil. We left a few acres of corn standing, just to see! When the second weekend of that December came and there had been little duck activity we decided to pull the plug so we could salvage the corn we had left behind and hope for next year. As we drove the road to the flooded field that Crooked Slough ran through, I happened to notice a group of about twenty Mallards working. I showed my Dad. We drove another hundred feet around a huge pin oak where we could see the upper two thirds of water. There wasn’t one group of Mallards, there was ten to fifteen groups; all milling around at various elevations and dropping into my duck club. We quickly exited and came back the next morning. We shot our limit in less than a half hour and did so every time we went before the season closed.

That was the start, and it has done nothing but get better. Every year the ducks start piling in with Wood Ducks and local Mallards leading the way. By the end of the first week in November we have Mallards by the thousands using our location to feed and rest through the night. This, along with managing the hunting conservatively, equals duck hunting at its Zenith.

Ask Gary to book a morning hunt with me. Depending on where we are in the duck season we may be hunting in the early afternoons. If that is the case, join me for a hunt and then watch the ducks pour in for the night. The emphasis is on quality at Crooked Slough. Besides lots of ducks, we have clean comfortable, dry, heated pits, and aerators and water pumps to keep the water open when the weather gets cold and the hunting really gets hot. You will be personally guided by me and a good friend of mine. I invite you to share my dream come true along with a cup of coffee, mallards dropping into the blocks, and as much fun as a guy can legally have.
