SCI International Convention

no comments

We recently returned from the SCI show in Las Vegas. The Safari Club International Convention has been held in Reno, Nevada since we started attending the trade show but this year it was moved to Las Vegas. The SCI convention brings visitors and vendors in from all over the world. We were not sure how the change in venue would affect the convention.

The SCI show was split up between two floors and our booth was located on the second floor. As a result the first day was slow as most of the attendees stayed on the first floor and some did not realize there was a second floor. The second and third day ended up being very busy. Our booth was located near the area SCI holds their live auction so despite the extra noise in the background we were happy with the amount of SCI visitors we had to our booth. The last day of the show was much like the first day, slow, as many people were leaving the convention to head back home.

Safari Club International ConventionOverall we were happy with the SCI show this year and signed up for the 2013 SCI Convention. It will be held in Reno next year, then retuning back to Las Vegas in 2014.  We changed a few things on our booth this year to help attract both Whitetail and Upland hunters. We added an Orvis endorsed wing-shooting lodge decal to our display along with some high quality quail and pheasant hunting photos. We went with less, but larger photos of the bucks we harvested last fall; along with a few of the giant whitetails we had taken the past couple years.

Many hunters visiting our booth showed an interest in a combination deer and upland hunt.  Several want to archery hunt for whitetails, while others would use a firearm. We always recommend adding the pheasant and quail hunt before or after the deer hunt. If a hunter is in the woods for whitetails and sees a monster buck, it’s very hard for him to come out of the deer woods to upland hunt. We recommend separating the two hunts and focusing on each. Most hunters want to come in and hunt deer for three or five days, followed by quail and pheasant hunting for two or three days. This makes for a great hunting experience! Some of the hunters were interested in our spring turkey hunts. Our 2012 spring turkey hunts were already sold out but we talked to them about hunting in 2013.

Several groups reserved their dates for 2012 and some for 2013 while at the show. Others are calling us after the convention to make sure the dates work for their calendar. Either way we are looking forward to having all the SCI members who booked a trip, hunt with us.
