Girls Getaway Weekend Review
June 1st, 2013
Something fantastic has been happening at Harpole’s Heartland Lodge. This spring, the lodge hosted two Girls’ Getaway Weekends complete with wine tastings, gourmet meals, and a range of activities. The weekends were meant to provide ladies with some much needed downtime and adventure, as well as the opportunity to enjoy quality time with friends and family. Mothers and daughters, sisters, college roommates, best friends, and coworkers all visited the lodge to share some quality time and a lot of laughs. For me, the Girls Weekends have been a dream come true. When we at the lodge started planning for the weekends, I thought of my friends, my sister, and my mom. I thought of how hard we women work – in our homes, our communities, and our offices. I thought we all deserved something really amazing, and I was hoping our Girls’ Getaway Weekend could be just that.
I was lucky enough to participate in both weekends, and I can honestly say that if you are on the fence about signing up for our next getaway…pull the trigger. It’s totally worth it!
Both weekends kicked off with a wine tasting. I have to say…I think this is my favorite part of the weekend. The Lodge offers a wine selection that has been carefully picked for the event. They even offered a couple of experimental wines for those looking to try something a little different. Everyone gets the chance to learn a bit about wine while getting to know each other. I was actually able to lead the tasting for the May weekend and really enjoyed the opportunity to meet and speak with so many wonderful women. The wine tasting offers the opportunity to try something totally new and enjoy great company. I have really enjoyed the more experimental reds, but the most popular wine seems to always be the light, fruity Moscato – just perfect for a warm summer night.
Midway through the event, the smells from the kitchen waft down the steps and people start to wonder what’s for dinner. There is nothing quite like a meal at the Lodge. No matter how many times I visit, I am always blown away at how amazing the meals are. Served family-style, every meal looks and tastes as good as grandma used to make. My absolute favorites were the steak and double baked potatoes. And, even though it seems impossible, make sure to save room for dessert! I remember everyone talking about how full they were – how they couldn’t eat another thing. But when they bring that dessert out…it’s impossible to resist!
The great thing about the Girls Weekend is that you really can do as much or as little as you like. We had quite a bit of rain for our April getaway, but many still opted to go the adventurous route and enjoy a sunset hayride. The driver is knowledgeable and stops to point out the critters you see along the way. There is nothing quite like taking in the sunset with good friends. It really is spectacular.
After the hayride and bonfire, most everyone chooses to head back to the lodge. Some attend the movie nights while others play pool, poker, chat by the fire or just relax in their rooms. My preference was to spend some time getting to know the different groups. It warmed my heart to see people having such a good time with the ones they love. The lodge just comes alive with the sounds of conversation and laughter.
The May Getaway featured something pretty special – a fruit design class taught by the lodge chefs. For years the chefs at Harpole’s have been making wonderful fruit creations to the delight of guests young and old. Their skills were truly allowed to shine as they demonstrated how to make strawberry roses, orange curls, kiwi flowers, and even a watermelon baby buggy. Now, I’m not the most artistic person in the world, and a lot of the time when I try to make some beautiful looking recipe from Pinterest it turns out a big pile of mush. I was pleasantly surprised when the skills the chefs taught were things that even I could handle. Next time you are hosting a party, or just trying to keep the kids entertained on a rainy day, you may want to consider fruit design.
If you have a group of a few people, I recommend traveling together and getting one of the luxury suites. These rooms feature a king sized bed, daybed, porch, fireplace, and whirlpool tub. After a day of outdoor fun, it is absolutely wonderful to come back to such a lovely room. In fact, after the hayride, many ladies elected to return to their rooms to enjoy a glass of wine, play a game, or just chat.
Next time you are looking to celebrate with your friends, consider the Girls Weekend at Harpole’s Heartland Lodge. It is truly the perfect place to relax and make memories.
