Turkey Season Kicks Off

Here at the lodge we try to help people of all ages get into hunting as well as gun and bow safety. Of course, some of our favorite times are working with the youth. Illinois Youth Turkey Season 2013The youth turkey season was April 6th-7th and you could say it started off with a “Bang” or two.

The opening of turkey season always starts with a two day youth season before the full season gets under way. Pictured here is Hunter Abney, son of Terry Abney (upland manager), with his first turkey. Hunter was hunting on some private family ground with the assistance of his brother Zach. The brother combo had an emotional first morning with some close encounters, some empty shells, and a few feathers.

However on the second morning, Hunter, with the help of Zack called in 4 nice long beards within 25-30 yards. Hunter closed the deal placing his tag on this beauty of a Double Bearded Bird. The bird sported an 8 ½” paint brush with another 5 ½” beard. The bird weighed in at 23lb with 1” spurs.

We also had visits from neighbors and friends stopping by the lodge to show off their son or daughter’s turkey as well.  Seeing and helping youth get into the sport of hunting is one of my favorite parts of this job. Like we always say here at the lodge these are memories and “Traditions that last a lifetime”. Congratulation to all the youth hunters this past weekend and good luck and safe hunting to everyone else for the rest of the season.
