Whitetail Hunting Illinois- September Scouting Update

lush brassica food plotIf you’re like me and you’re not too fond of this end of summer heat.. your mind starts to wonder to the frost ridden mornings of October and November. You count the days and weeks left until the bow opener and you start coming up with a finalized game plan for the upcoming 2019 deer season. Maybe you already have a buck from last season that’s your #1 target for this fall or you’re still on the hunt for this year’s #1 buck. Either way, the days are getting shorter and hunter’s across the Midwest are chomping at the bit to start off the 2019 deer season.

Here at Heartland Lodge, we’ve been busy monitoring trail cameras, mowing our clover food plots, over-seeding a few of our fall plots with oats and rye, and fine tuning our treestand set ups. So far, this September has been fairly mild and wet. Over the last few weeks we’ve received several inches of rain. With all the precipitation our food plots are looking very lush to say the least! After a heavy rain on Sunday, this upcoming week’s forecast looks to warm back into the 90’s before a cool front moves through next weekend bringing another chance of rain. Although I’m ready for the 90 degree temperatures to be over with, I know the brassica food plots flourish in this late summer heat. One would think after this heavy rainfall this last weekend and the sunny and hot days forecasted for this week, that fall food plots should really make a jump.

Illinois archery outfittersThe whitetails are still feeding heavily on the several thousand acres of late planted soybeans here in Pike County as we received well above average precipitation amounts.  Soon the bachelors of summer will be growing tired of each other as the number of daylight hours dwindle and testosterone levels rise. As the season approaches, we’ll be keeping close tabs on the different phases of the whitetail’s world and preferred food sources as we make the final preparations for the 2019 deer season.

We’ve glassed several great bucks this year while glassing around some of our properties… To check out the latest scouting photos and trail camera pictures click here >>.  For more information on our fall whitetail hunts click here>>
