New Philadelphia: Free Frank McWorter

Frank McWorter was a Kentucky slave who purchased his own freedom and and then founded New Philadelphia, Illinois in 1836 for the purpose of establishing a new, and integrated, community. He sold property in New Philadelphia to other freed slaves and to white and used the proceeds to buy his family out of slavery. The New Philadelphia town site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2009.
