What Size Shot do I Need for Upland Game?

I am often asked what size shot hunters need when hunting quail and pheasants.
The first thingHarvest pictures after a great day afield I need to know is what gauge of shotgun you are using.  If you are using a 12 gauge or 20 gauge, I would recommend 7 ½ shot. If it is windy or the birds are getting up early, I would back it up with a 6 for a second shot.

I am also asked if the hunter needs high or low brass shells. We hunt over pointing dogs, so you usually get close to the dogs before the birds ever get up.  Most shots are 20 to 25 yards. At this short distance, high brass shells are not necessary. I do have a few customers that hunt with 410’s and 28-gauge guns. In these instances, we have found it is better to use a 6 shot so it doesn’t tear up the quail but will still knock down a pheasant. If you need shells, we do have 12, 20, 28, and 410 shells available for purchase at the lodge.

Take a full, in depth look at what shot sizes you need for pheasant and quail here.

  1. I am a female physician wanting to bird hunt. I miss my hunting days in Michigan. So glad you have dogs and guides! I would also love to turkey hunt. I practice in Silvis, IL.
