By Chris Larsen Pheasant hunting is a great way to get introduced to bird hunting. You don’t need a lot of equipment and although the finer points may take years to learn, it doesn’t take much to grasp a basic understanding of how to hunt pheasants.

  • Heartland Lodge is always my favorite place to come and hunt.  The food is exceptional and the employees are helpful and friendly.  This was my fourth visit and won't be the last.

  • Don't change a thing! I have been a lot of places and this tops them all! Everything from Matt making us laugh on the sporting clay range to Brad and his team of dogs that blew my mind in the field. These guides are so fun and friendly. Then top it off with the amazing lodge, service, and food. I haven't stopped smiling since I arrived at Heartland and I'm sure I will drive everyone back home crazy talking about this trip for months. Thank you so much for an unbelievable trip!
    - Sam Mette-Teutopolis, Illinois
  • Didn't want to leave! We did not receive a survey upon departure, but I felt I HAD to brag on you guys! The past 11 years I listened to my husband talk about hunting trips-FINALLY-this past week I got to go on my FIRST hunting trip. I am SO GLAD my first trip was at your lodge with Terry & his dogs. I could not have asked for a better trip. The lodge, THE FOOD, the land, the people-*Terry*, "Yankee", Resa, Melissa, & Shannon... everything & everybody was awesome. And Terry's dogs--loved every, single one of them--so smart! I can't thank Terry enough for being such a great guide! Patient, hard-working, hilarious, self-esteem booster, great teacher...ETC.! Thank you ALL for the hospitality. I hope to be back next year. AND if you ever decide to share your recipes, please put me at the top of your list to receive them! :)

Waterfowl Hunting

Heartland Lodge and Illinois waterfowl hunting cannot be compared to any other duck hunting area in the United States. Hunt diver ducks, such as Canvas Backs, along the great Mississippi River, or Mallards, Wood Ducks, and Teal in the flooded bean, corn and millet fields.

The experience doesn't end in the field. You'll instantly feel comfortable with home-cooked meals and friendly staff who are always at Heartland Lodge.

Waterfowl Hunting Conditions

We provide pits and blinds located in flooded corn, bean, and millet fields. We like to take groups of 2-4 duck hunters. Pits and blinds are heated. Guests are driven to within a short walking distance of pits, shortly before legal shooting hours. Our professional waterfowl hunting guide will have decoys set and dog in place in anticipation of the morning's excitement.

Waterfowl Hunting Options

Duck Hunting - mallards, pintail, widgeon, gadwall, wood ducks, and teal along with Canadian geese from our flooded fields.

Waterfowl Hunting Packages

Waterfowl hunts are available from late October to January 31st. Illinios duck hunting season is anticipated to open the last Saturday in October, running 60 consecutive days, through December. Illinois goose hunting will run in conjunction with duck season but will continue through the end of January.

Four-night, Three-day Duck Hunting Package - Arrive the day before your hunt, between 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Hunt for three days and depart after breakfast on the fifth day.

Three-night, Two-day Duck Hunting Package - Arrive the day before the hunt, between 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Hunt for two days and depart after breakfast on the fourth day.

If limiting out early on duck hunting, or if the ducks are not flying one day, an optional late morning upland hunt or round of sporting clays may be arranged. (A waterfowl hunt can be exchanged for a full morning upland hunt at no charge. But there is a charge to change an upland hunt to a waterfowl hunt.) All non-scheduled changes are subject to availability of personnel.

We recommend combination hunts with waterfowl in the morning and upland in the afternoon!
