Testimonials

  • Everything was wonderful.  The property was beautiful and well maintained--so peaceful!  The lodge itself was so comfortable and cozy.  The food was phenomenal!  Each meal was more delicious than the last and there was always plenty.  I enjoyed the family style dining.  The biscuits and gravy were delicious and I consider myself a biscuit and gravy snob because my grandma used to make them for me all the time. The staff was so friendly and accommodating at everything!
    - Sean and Corey Johnson
  • The Heartland Lodge experience was exactly what we needed for a couple days of getting away and relaxing! The staff was friendly, informative, and accommodating from planning our trip on the phone to the guides during our activities.  We loved seeing the deer on the grounds during the bonfire! We met some other great guests from Chicago as well! We will be visiting again!
    - Kerry and Carol Loughary. Rushville, IL
  • Thoroughly met our expectations! My husband and I celebrated our 7th Anniversary at the resort. The staff was friendly and very accommodating to our needs.  The atmosphere was top notch.  Everything was clean and well kept!  We brought out ATV and the trails were fantastic! We will definitely be back!

Scenic Hayride

Heartland's sunset hayride is a favorite among guests who return each year to take the scenic hour ride along the bluffs of the Mississippi River. The ride takes you along a working Elk farm, cattle and horse ranches, and turns around at one of the most scenic views of the Mississippi River valley.

The view of the sunset is one of the most beautiful in the Mid-West! You will see an abundance of wildlife including Whitetail Deer, Wild Turkeys, and all the beauty the country has to offer.

Bird Watching

Heartland's backyard bird sanctuary and its 1200 acres of bird habitat make it one of the best locations for Illinois birdwatching and to view many different species of birds. The backyard sanctuary has regular visitors including Cardinals, Goldfinches, Purple Finches, woodpeckers, Bluebirds, Chickadees, and Nuthatches. Heartland's prairie restoration program consists of CRP fields of Big Blue Stem, Little Blue Stem, and Indian Grass. Millet fields are planted for ample food supply. This habitat is ideal for quail, pheasants, turkeys, and other native birds.

Eagle watching is at its peak from mid January thru mid March. The prime eagle watching destinations are only a short drive away! Great dining, wonderful wildlife viewing, and scenic views are all within a days drive from the lodge. A great day trip is driving to Clarksville MO and through the small towns on the Great River Road and National Scenic Byway of highway 79. You can cross the Mississippi River on one of the ferries to the Great River Road in Illinois. Enjoy Grafton IL and travel back to the lodge on the beautiful National Scenic Byway.
