Local Archer Shooting for the Stars
Northeast Missouri teenager Brooke Miller took up the sport of archery 4 years ago. Since then, she has won multiple local, state and national titles.
The rural Ewing, Missouri archer now has her sights set on something even higher, a spot on the USA National CADET team. The CADET team is made up of the top 5 qualifiers ages 15-17 from a series of archery tournaments hosted by USA Archery across the United States during the course of a year. Brooke just turned 14 years old and is typically competing with girls up to 4 years older than her.
The journey to make the team began back in March as Miller traveled to Wichita, KS to compete in the US National Indoor Championships. She had a very good tournament and finished in 2nd place out of over 100 competitors. From there, she traveled to Newberry, FL in May to compete in the Outdoor Gator Cup. This was the first Outdoor tournament of its kind Brooke had ever competed in. She had another good tournament finishing in second place yet again. In July, she then traveled to Hamilton, Ohio to compete in the US National Outdoor Championships. After putting in a lot of practice, everything came together and Miller was awarded the GRAND NATIONAL TITLE after a combination of 3 days of shooting.
The three listed tournament finishes has Brooke setting in the second qualifying spot and basically assured a spot on the National Team. Miller will attend the final qualifying tournament of the series in September at College Station, Texas. She goes into that shoot with a chance to move up to the first qualifying position and be the team captain. Making the team will give Brooke the opportunity to compete in domestic, as well as international tournaments representing team USA. In November, Brooke plans on attending a week long selection camp in San Diego, CA for a chance to be selected to a spot on the JUNIOR OLYMPIC DREAM TEAM. This is a program aimed at training shooters for international competitions. If selected, she will gain direct coaching from the USA Archery World and Olympic coaches. Miller’s overall goal is to have a chance at making the Olympic team in 2024 and beyond.
Miller is the daughter of Kevin and Lori Miller of rural Ewing, Missouri. She is the granddaughter of Stan and Patricia Hinkle of Ewing, Linda Maggart of Kirksville and the late Danny Miller of Knox City.
